East Asian Buddhism

East Asian Buddhism is a collective term for the schools of Buddhism that developed in the East Asian region, most of which are part of the Mahayana transmission. These include Chinese Buddhism, Korean Buddhism, Japanese Buddhism, and Vietnamese Buddhism.

The schools of Buddhism most prominent in Sri Lanka and the Southeast Asian countries is Theravada Buddhism.

Mahayana Buddhism is often mistakenly categorized as a blending of Mahayana Buddhism with elements of Chinese thought and culture, such as Confucianism and Taoism. However, this is only true with Mahayana Buddhism in East Asia, or perhaps East Asian Buddhism. Whereas Mahayana schools elsewhere are links to the Vajrayana schools of Tibet.
